Land stewardship chair appointed

Michael Goss has been appointed to fill the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food sponsored chair at the University of Guelph, and will assume the post in July. Michael Goss is recognized as a leading authority in land stewardship research. Goss earned a PhD in soil science at Reading University in 1974. He was recently head of the plant division of the Macauley Land Use Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland and before that was at the UK Agriculture and Food Research Council Letcombe Laboratory and the Rothamsted Experimental Station.

The chair in land stewardship is a five year appointment. Goss will be responsible for the development of innovative soil management and crop production systems for Ontario that are economically viable and environmentally sound.

The establishment of the chair complements and strengthens the university's unique expertise in soil conservation, says Murray Miller, director of the University's Centre for Soil and Water Conservation Information Bureau (SWCIB). The SWCIB was established as part of the federal/provincial Soil and Water Environmental Enhancement Program (SWEEP). Both the chair and the bureau are coordinated through the Centre
