TALKING ON THE TELEPHONE

By Jeff Johnston

Tomas Nimmo and I are looking at the feasibility of creating a telephone clearinghouse for the marketing of Ontario organic products. This clearinghouse would make farmers' products available to processors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers simply by making a telephone call.

Farmers would call and list what they have for sale, the quantity available, and an asking price. Buyers would call and obtain phone numbers for farmers selling what the buyer what the buyer wants. Then the buyer would deal with the farmer directly.

Charges would either be a flat rate on a 1-976 phone line (per minute), or based on an annual membership fee plus a percentage of the purchase price negotiated by the farmer and the buyer (half paid by each).

Tomas and I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. I can be reached at (416) 861-1254. Tomas can be reached at (705) 444-0923.
